Malku Institute of Technology (Malku) is a private research and training institution incorporated in Uganda. In 2017 Malku signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Africa Institute for Strategic Resource Services and Development (AFRISA). Together they have designed and implemented a project called the Household Economic Empowerment Project (HEEP). HEEP trains farmers in rural communities to establish family agribusinesses.
AFRISA is an innovation and partnership platform in Makerere University that was formed to deliver transformation to communities through Skills, Science, Technology and Innovations (SSTI). The HEEP project is anchored in a strong institutional arrangement that supports its expansion not only in Uganda but across Africa. The goal of HEEP is to improve Household income and Food Security in the target community through investment in human capital.
There are four phases to the intervention
Phase 1: Mobilization, Sensitization, Recruitment, and Training Needs Assessment
Phase 2: Knowledge Transfer (Training) and Commissioning
Phase 3: Enterprise Establishment and Nurturing
Phase 4: Assessment and Accreditation
The training is done in the local language. A HEEP project was implemented in Kijjuya Village, Mubende District, Uganda in March 2019. In this village more than 70% of the population lives on less than $1.90 per day.
